Signing 2019

Congratulations to Broxx Comia, Evan Nolli and Kinsale Philip who are the latest Hyacks to earn college scholarships. Comia signed his letter of intent today with the University of Manitoba, while Nolli and Philip signed with Simon Fraser University and University of Toronto respectively, in February. All three players were among the top 70 ranked players in Canada by Canada Football Chat and received numerous scholarship offers. Read more on Nolli's, Philip's, and Comia's signings here.

For the 2nd consecutive season, the Hyacks will be playing on the final day of the season with a chance to take home Subway Bowl AAA Championship, thanks to an impressive 33-0 win over Terry Fox on Saturday at BC Place. Kinsale Philip threw 3 TD passes, including a pair to Matthew Lalim and one to Matt Drake. Greyson Planinsic scored along the ground, while Zachery Northgraves kicked a pair of field goal. Vishaan Narayan, Evan Nolli and Shaye Rathjen were among those who stood out on defense. The Hyacks will now take on Mt Douglas in the Championship game on Saturday, Dec 1st at 7pm at BC Place.


November 17, 2018

The Hyacks turned in their most complete effort of the season with a dominating 34-16 win over the #1 ranked team in BC, Lord Tweedsmuir. Broxx Comia had a career game with 299 yards rushing and 5 TDs, tying a school record, as the team rushed for an impressive 447 yards in total. Defensively Matthew Lalim and Kinsale Philip were among those who stood out defensively. New West will now play in the provincial AAA semi finals for the 4th straight year, on Saturday, Nov 24th at 7pm.


October 26, 2018

The Hyacks scored early and often on Friday, as they got back into the win column with a 42-29 win over Seaquam. New West led 21-0 early in the 2nd quarter, thanks to a pair of long TD runs by Broxx Comia and another by Payton Myers, who also found Ajay Chol for a TD reception. In the 2nd half Michael Kingsley and Taran Birdi scored. The team is now 5-2 in conference play (6-3 overall) and with the win have clinched a home game for the first round of the playoffs.


September 29, 2018

The boot is staying home, thanks to a 20-6 win over South Delta in an intense, defensive battle. Ajay Chol made a pair of impressive TD receptions, while Austin Galbraith intercepted a pair of passes, returning one for the game-clinching TD. New West now leads the series 7-3 and this marks the first time since it began in 2005 that a road team has won the coveted boot. The Hyacks have now won 4-straight games and are 3-0 in conference play.

Homecoming 2018

A crowd of over 2000 fans once against celebrated a Hyack win on Homecoming, presented by Key West Ford, 40-6 was the final over Abbotsford. Kinsale Philip combined for 151 yards of total offense, rushing for 2 TDs and passing for one. Ajay Chol caught a TD pass and also returned an interception for a TD. Shaye Rathjen scored on a fumble return, while Mahtab Garcha rounded out the scoring for the home team. The defense was outstanding all night, forcing 7 Abby turnovers. Evan Nolli and Vishaan Narayan were outstanding along the defensive line, while Philip managed 6 tackles, 1 sack and a pair of fumble recoveries. Thanks to all of the parents, volunteers and sponsors who made Homecoming 2018 another tremendous success.


September 7, 2018

After a slow start, the Hyacks got their game in gear and defeated the Carson Graham Eagles 36-14 in the regular season opener for both teams. Michael Kingsley and Broxx Comia each went over the 100 yard rushing mark and combined for 3 TDs. Grade 10 lineman, Vishaan Narayan brought the house down with a 75 yard fumble return to make it 22-6 at halftime. Kinsale Philip rounded out the scoring with an 18 yard run. As a team the Hyacks rushed for 331 yards. Evan Nolli was a standout defensively once again with 8 tackles and a sack.


June 13, 2018

Yanni Angelopoulos becomes the 6th member of the class of 2018 to earn a college scholarship, as he signed with St Mary's University in Halifax. Yanni was named the Top Lineman in the Subway Bowl AAA Provincial Championship game as well as for NWSS during the 2017 season.

In March, Provincial All-star and CFC 100 lineman, Isaiah James signed with the University of Saskatchewan. In February, CFC All-Canadians and BC Provincial all-stars Sammy Sidhu and Sebastien Reid signed with the University of Calgary. Lucas Sabau, who scored the championship winning points in the 2017 Subway Bowl signed with Simon Fraser University, while Sidoo Scholarship winner Finn Stark has signed with the University of Toronto. NWSS 2016 graduate Rochon Bhattacharya has also signed with SFU as a transfer, after spending the last two years at West Hills Jr College in California.

Champions 2017

Congratulations to the Hyacks for bringing home the first ever Varsity Provincial Championship in school history. Severio Asaba's TD with no time remaining on the clock followed by Lucas Sabau's 2-point convert gave the Hyacks a 15-14 walk-off victory and set off a celebration that will never be forgotten. The win capped a perfect 11-0 season against BC competition.


November 3, 2017

The Hyacks saved their best performance for last, with a dominant 63-16 win over South Delta on Seniors Night. Sammy Sidhu opened the scoring on the Hyacks first possession with a 41 yard run. Lucas Sabau, Kinsale Philip and Sidhu again paced the Hyacks to a 29-8 lead after the first quarter. Sebastien Reid scored twice in the 2nd quarter to give the home team a 43-8 lead shortly before halftime. Juan Cespedes and Michael Kinglsey rounded out the scoring, as the Hyacks racked up 551 yards rushing, a new single game school record.

The win gave the Hyacks the coveted Kushnir Boot, along with the Western Conference regular season title. It also capped a first ever unbeaten regular season, as the team finished 7-0 in league play (9-1 overall).


October 20, 2017

The Hyacks scored early and often in a 56-7 win over Belmont on Friday at Mercer Stadium. Sebastien Reid scored three TDs in the first quarter, Sammy Sidhu scored 2 TDs, while QB Kinsale Philip and Michael Kingsley each added 1 major, pacing the home team to a 49-0 lead at halftime. Finn Stark caught a 37 yard TD pass in the 3rd quarter to round out the scoring. Severio Asaba led the defense with 7 tackles.


October 14, 2017

Another successful Tailgate Auction sponsored by River Market at Westminster Quay is in the books. Last Saturday evening nearly 180 guests and sponsors helped us reach our fundraising goal for the NWSS Hyack Football.

There were special moments throughout the evening, as we welcomed our team sponsors, The Record, G&F Financial Group, Key West Ford and Team Dave Vallee and friends - whose support on and off the field have helped make our Community and high school football programs stand out for all the right reasons. Barb Beale scored the winning bid for the grand prize Hawaiian Vacation, donated by Live Auction sponsor Westland Insurance and WI director Brent Atkinson, a long-time friend and supporter of the Hyacks. Isaiah "Big Pappy" James edged out fellow varsity captain, Yanni 'Zeus' Angelopoulos in an arm wrestling bout that caused a frenzy amongst their fans.


October 13, 2017

The varsity Hyacks returned home and continued their winning ways, knocking off Notre Dame, 44-27 at Mercer Stadium. Broxx Comia and Sammy Sidhu each scored a pair of TDs, as the Hyacks jumped out to a 31-7 lead mid-way through the 2nd quarter. Defensively, Sidhu (11 tackles) and Severio Asaba (8 tackles) led the way. The special teams also contributed as Sebastien Reid scored on a 75 yard kickoff return and Zachery Northgraves chipped in with a 39 yard field goal.


October 7, 2017

The varsity Hyacks return home following a 28-13 win at Seaquam, in a battle of two of the top ranked teams in BC. The win was a breakout performance for senior RB, Sammy Sidhu, who rushed for 187 yards and all 4 TDs. Defensively, Kinsale Philip led the Hyacks with 10 tackles, including 2 for loss, while Sidhu added 8 tackles. Taran Birdi pulled down another two interceptions, as the defense came away with 5 turnovers and did not allow a point in the 2nd half.


September 22, 2017

A suffocating defensive performance paved the way for a 20-14 win at Vancouver College. The defensive line of Isaiah James, Yanni Angelopoulos, Evan Nolli and Vishaan Narayan turned in its best effort of the season. Offensively, QB Kinsale Philip turned in his second 3-TD passing game of the season, connecting with Finn Stark, Matthew Lalim and Sammy Sidhu for majors.


September 22, 2017

In a battle of two of the top four ranked teams in BC, the Hyacks came away with a 29-6 win over Mt Douglas in Victoria. The visitors opened the scoring when Kinsale Philip found Finn Stark for a 35 yard TD pass. Lucas Sabau and Broxx Comia scored rushing TDs, before Philip found Sebastien Reid for a 40 yard TD to close out the scoring.


September 8, 2017

The Hyacks sent their fans home happy with a 42-14 win over Mission on Friday night in Homecoming presented by Key West Ford. Sebastien Reid scored the first 3 TDs of the game for the Hyacks, scoring on a pair of receptions and a punt return. He would also add an interception in the first half. Sammy Sidhu, Finn Stark and Michael Kingsley also scored, while Kinsale Philip threw 3 TD passes. New West improved to 2-1 on the season and will open league play on Sept 22nd at Mt Douglas.


August 26, 2017

Fans will get to see their Varsity Hyacks for the first time this season this Friday, Sept 1st when they play host to Scappoose HS from Oregon. The Indians are a perennial power in their state, having reached the 4A State Championship game in 2015. This will be the first time since 2008 that the Hyacks (ranked #2 in BC) have hosted an American team at Mercer. Please note the early 6:30pm start time. There will also be a JV scrimmage between the two schools beginning at 3:30pm.


August 25, 2017

The Hyacks wrapped up a fun week in Southern California with a 22-9 win over Linfield Christian. Sebastian Reid, Broxx Comia and Michael Kingsley all scored for the visitors. Defensively, Sammy Sidhu, Isaiah James, Yanni Angelopoulos and Evan Nolli all stood out.  The week included two days at Disneyland, a day at Huntington Beach along with the Rams-Chargers NFL game.

After an intense summer of workouts, the Hyacks will begin fall camp on Monday, Aug 14th and practices will be held every weeknight of that week. Fall camp is mandatory and we look forward to getting started with what should be an exciting season. A complete look at the fall camp practice schedule can be found here.

After a successful performance in the Spring Jamboree in Bellingham, the Hyacks will begin their summer program on Monday, June 26th. Workouts will take place every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at 10:30. All players are expected to attend all workouts when in town. Fall camp begins on Aug 13th. After four months of hard work this off-season in the weight room, the Hyacks will take to the field for spring camp starting next Tuesday. There will be ten practices over 3 weeks after school with the teams taking part in their respective jamborees on June 9th (Varsity) and 10th (JV). The complete calendar can be found here.

A number of Hyacks turned in strong efforts while taking part in the BCHS provincial team selection programs: Isaiah James, Yanni Angelopoulos, Kinsale Philip, Evan Noli, Zachery Northgraves, Ishan Aurora,Darrio Cade and Vishaan Narayan. James and Angelopoulos recently played for Team BC vs Team Ontario in the CFC East-West Challenge in Ottawa.

A pair of Hyacks were honored as the top youth in New Westminster in their respective categories: Connor Pattison was given the Youth Athletics and Sportsmanship award Liam Mackay earned the Youth Leadership award.



March 21, 2017

Two more Hyacks are on their way to play college football this fall as Trew Dancey and Prento Durigon both accepted football scholarships. Dancey will attend McMaster University in Hamilton, ON, while Durigon will play at St Mary's University in Hamilton. This brings the total number of Hyacks who will be playing college football to 35 in the past 13 years. For more details, please see the newsletter.

The Hyack family celebrated another successful season at Roma Hall with the annual awards banquet. Principal, John Tyler, and School trustees Jonina Campbell and Casey Cook were among those in attendance, along with major supporters Louise Perry of G&F Financial and Dave Vallee from ReMax Advantage. For the 2nd consecutive season, the Hyacks advanced to the Provincial AAA semi-finals, thanks to a thrilling 44-35 come from behind win over Abbotsford at BC Place. New West exploded for 30 consecutive points in the 2nd half and never looked back. Trew Dancey scored 3 TDs, while Lucas Sabau and Prento Durigon put things out of reach with touchdowns in the 4th quarter.


November 11, 2016

The Hyacks scored early and often, as they defeated Mt Boucherie 62-10 in a Wildcard playoff game at Mercer Stadium on Friday. Player of the Game, Sammy Sidhu scored the game's first 2 TDs and finished with 134 yards rushing on 12 carries. Seven different Hyacks scored TDs as the teach racked up 455 rushing yards. Linemen of the game Connor Pattison led the team with 6 tackles. Prento Durigon, Josh Olango and Liam Mackay also stood out on defense. The Hyacks will now face Abbotsford on Saturday, Nov 19th at 5:30pm at BC Place Stadium

Five members of the Hyacks were named to the AAA Western Conference All-star team. On Defense, Connor Pattison (LB), Prento Durigon (DE) and Ren Tjernagel (DB) were honored. On offense, Sarban Sidhu (C) and Lucas Sabau (FB) were also recognized.


October 21, 2016

It was a 2nd straight win over a highly ranked opponent, as the Hyacks defeated #1 ranked and defending Provincial Champion Mt Douglas, 45-19 at Mercer Stadium. The Hyacks exploded for 30 points in the 3rd quarter, beginning with Prento Durigon who blocked a punt that Liam Mackay recovered in the endzone for a TD. A long Andrew Delamere set up Kinsale Philip's 1 yd QB sneak, Lucas Sabau then scored his 2nd TD of the game on a 60 yard run, and finally Philip threw a 28 yd TD pass to Durigon to cap off the quarter. Defensively Connor Pattison stood out with his best game as a Hyack with 11 tackles, including 3 for loss and a pair of QB sacks. Isaiah James was named the Lineman of the Game.


It was a special night for 18 Hyack graduating players as the team honored them and their parents during the annual Seniors Night ceremony which took place following the game.

Neither pounding rain nor gusting wind could stop our 14th annual Tailgate Auction from becoming our biggest and most successful to date. Over 200 guests and sponsors helped us raise the most-ever funds for the NWSS Hyack Football program (with a portion of proceeds going to the Royal City Hyack Football Club). On what turned out to be a perfect Friday night for football, the Varsity Hyacks staged a dramatic come from behind 13-10 win over 3rd ranked Vancouver College. Kinsale Philip opened the scoring, then later found TE Prento Durigon for a 30 yd TD pass with less than 5 min to play for the game’s final points. Andrew Delamere was named Player of the Game, while Connor Pattison was named Lineman of the game. Sammy Sidhu and Ben Tjernagel also stood out on defense.

Despite a rainy night, it was another outstanding night at Mercer Stadium as Homecoming 2016 presented by Key West Ford was a big success. A crowd well in access of 1500 watched the Hyacks defeat Carson Graham 51-0. The event also included the Save on Foods Family Fun Zone and Pre-game Party, CTV Sports was also in attendance. NWSS band did a fantastic job entertaining those in attendance, and finally, Andrew Thind was this year's winner of a pre-owned Ford Focus in our raffle, courtesy of Key West Ford.

On the field, the Hyacks didn't disappoint as they dominated Carson Graham, topping the 50-point mark for the 2nd consecutive game, 51-19 was the final score. Sammy Sidhu was named the Player of the Game with 147 yards and 2 TDs on just 7 carries. Lucas Sabau also had a strong game with 114 yards and a TD, while Finn Stark and Juan Cespedes scored their first ever TDs. Sarban Sidhu was named the Dairy Queen Lineman of the Game, while defensively Connor Pattison recorded a season-high 13 tackles.


September 20, 2016

Homecoming 2016 is finally upon us, as the Hyacks will show off their "New Look & New Ground" along with another exciting game. The whole community is invited to cheer on the Hyacks Varsity team as they take on the Carson Graham Eagles from North Vancouver, this Friday night, September 23 at Mercer Stadium.

The pre-game festivities start at 4:30 p.m. with the annual flag football challenge for Hyacks alumni. Family-fun starts at 5:00 p.m. and features on-field kids' activities like the bouncy castle and football toss. There's also a civic pride tug-of-war competition, and of course, you could WIN a Ford Focus in a raffle, courtesy of Key West Ford.

The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. just after the game ball is parachuted onto the field by the B.C.Sky Diving Team. The NWSS band will become a Marching Band and play at halftime.

The Hyacks scored early and often, winning 51-19 over GW Graham. Seven different Hyacks scored TDs. A 79 yard run by FB Lucas Sabau followed by a 64 yard TD run by Sammy Sidhu got things going for the visitors, before Mohamed Abdi also scored his first TD as a Hyack. Gr 10 QB Kinsale Philip threw a pair of TD passes, 1 each to Prento Durigon and Shane Belsher. Defensively Sammy Sidhu and Connor Pattison each had 6 tackles including a sack, while Ben Tjernagel intercepted his 2nd pass of the season.

The Varsity Hyacks celebrated their return to Mercer Stadium on Friday with a 28-19 win over Notre Dame of Calgary. Gr 10 RB Broxx Comia rushed for 225 yards and 2 TDs on 15 carries, more than half the Hyacks 400 yards of offense on the night. Ben Tjernagel and Trew Dancey also scored for New West. Shane Belsher, Connor Pattison and Prento Durigon were among those who stood out on defense.


September 6, 2016

The new turf field will be ready, as will the Hyacks, for the return of high school football action to Mercer Stadium this Friday night. The Hyacks will also debut their brand new uniforms, as they take on Notre Dame High School from Calgary. The Pride is currently ranked #3 in Alberta while the Hyacks are ranked #3 in BC. The game will also be broadcast live on

Last Friday night, the Hyacks fell 40-24 at Scappoose, Oregon. There were some bright spots however, including Trew Dancey who paced the way for the Hyacks with 124 yards rushing and 1 TD. Receivers Ben Tjernagel and Shane Belsher combined for 13 receptions for 136 yards, with Tjernagel also adding 7 tackles and a 53 yard interception return for a TD.

Spring Training 2016

Close to 70 members of the Hyacks Football program took part in spring training. The 3 weeks of practices ended with successful performances by both the varsity and JV teams in their jamborees. The Varsity squad fared well against 3 teams from Washington State at Civic Stadium in Bellingham, while the JVs won the "King of the Hill" competition in the VC jamboree. More than 70 members of the Hyacks Football program have been working hard this off season to build upon the success of 2015. Off-season activities include weight room, study halls, 7 on 7 spring league, speed school and ball skills. Spring training begins on May 24th and runs through June 11th. Jamie Shiho will be joining Jeff Lugtu as the most recent member of the 2016 class to sign with Simon Fraser University. Rochon Bhattacharya has committed to Westhills Junior College in California, while 2011 NWSS graduate Jamie Wandell has committed to the University of Regina. This group brings the total number of Hyacks who will be playing college football to 34 in the past 13 years.

JV Champions 2015

Congratulations to the JV Hyacks who brought home the first ever provincial title in the history of the football program. The team defeated Mt Douglas 48-29 on Saturday at BC Place Stadium. Sammy Sidhu was named the game's MVP with 264 yards rushing at 4 TDs. Isaiah James was named the Most Outstanding Lineman. The win capped off an outstanding season that saw the team go undefeated, 12-0, against BC competition.


November 22, 2015

For the first time in the history of the program, both the Varsity and JV teams will be playing in the AAA Provincial semi finals! The Varsity squad turned in a strong effort in a 27-13 win over STM. The Hyacks dominated this contest with over 300 yards rushing, while holding their opponents to just 4 first downs through 3 quarters. The defense forced 6 turnovers, led by Kevin Osea's 2 interceptions. Jeff Lugtu added an interception to his 8 tackles. Offensively, David Penalver rushed for 124 yards and a TD, while Trew Dancey scored 2 TDs and Gurvir Ghuman added 1 TD, along with 6 tackles and a sack.

The varsity team will play at BC Place Stadium this Saturday, Nov 28th at 7:30 pm. Advance tickets can be purchased for $10 online and are available from Marilyn Davis in the sigma office.

The JVs defeated Mt Boucherie 76-26, the most points ever scored by a Hyack team at any level. Sammy Sidhu scored 5 TDs in the first half and rushed for close to 400 yards. The JVs now face Seaquam on Thursday, Nov 26th at 3:00 pm at Mercer Stadium.

The Hyacks turned in lopsided 61-7 win over Handsworth in the wildcard playoffs on Friday at Mercer Stadium, in what was a record setting night for Trew Dancey. The Gr 11 running back set a school record by scoring 5 TDs in a single game. Dancey rushed for 225 yards on just 15 carries, and has been named the Provincial Player of the Week. Josh Olango rushed for a pair of TDs while David Penalver and Josh Nerona each added 1 TD, as the Hyacks rushed for 546 yards, the 2nd most in school history. Defensively, Rochon Bhattacharya intercepted 2 passes and added 5 tackles.

Six more Hyacks were selected as AAA Western Conference All-stars, following their outstanding play this season: Linebacker Jeff Lugtu safety David Penalver and offensive lineman Sunny Rishi, were among the top rated players at their respective positions. Receiver Michael Thind, QB Jamie Shiho and defensive lineman Dillon Cusker were also selected. Honorable mention, receiving votes was Gurvir Ghuman.

The Hyacks knocked off defending provincial champion South Delta 35-34 on Friday on Seniors Night at Mercer Stadium. Jamie Shiho rushed for 118 yards and 2 TDs and also passed for a TD to Jeff Lugtu. David Penalver and Jordan Guzman rounded out the scoring. Gurvir Ghuman recorded 8 tackles and a sack. The Hyacks are now ranked 4th in the provincial rankings and will face Handsworth on Friday night at Mercer in the Wildcard playoffs.

Gurvir Ghuman, Trew Dancey and Jordan Guzman all scored in the first half, as the Hyacks raced out to a 21-3 halftime lead, before winning the Homecoming game 21-10 over GW Graham. The off-field festivities were also a huge success. A crowd well in access of 2000 watched the Hyacks defeat GW Graham 21-10. The event also included the Save on Foods Family Fun Zone and Pre-game Party, along with the new FG Richards Sr Memorial tug-of-war competition, which was won by Team Labour. CTV Sports was also in attendance, hosting their sportcast live from Mercer Stadium.

And that was just the beginning: The game ball was again parachuted in by the BC Skydiving Team. At halftime, NWSS band turned into a marching band for a day, and did a fantastic job entertaining those in attendance. Debbie Cusker was this year’s winner of a pre-owned Ford Focus in our raffle, courtesy of Key West Ford. And the night was topped off by a post-game fireworks show.

The varsity Hyacks picked up their first win of the season, a 47-17 decision over Centennial. RB Jordan Guzman finished with 126 yards and 3 TDs on 13 carries, while QB Jamie Shiho rushed for 91 yards and 2 TDs, while completing 7 of 11 passes for 122 yards. Gurvir Ghuman and Trew Dancey rounded out the scoring for the Hyacks, who rushed for 361 yards as a team, using 9 different ball-carriers.

Everyone will be pulling together to celebrate the Royal City as New Westminster "Unites Underthe Lights" at Hyacks Homecoming 2015. This year's festivities feature the Hyacks Varsity team taking on G.W. Graham Grizzlies, the annual flag football challenge for Hyacks alumni and family-fun with on-field kids' activities. And there's a new twist: the inaugural F.G. Richards Memorial tug-of-war competition featuring teams from City Hall, Royal Columbian Hospital, the New Westminster School District and the New Westminster and District Labour Council. After a very successful opening week of training camp last week, highlighted by our 3-day Unity Camp at CFB Chilliwack, the Hyacks will open the season this Friday night at Blaine HS. At 4 pm the JVs will take on Bellevue HS, one of the top HS programs in America. At 7 pm the Varsity squad will play Blaine HS. Fans making the trip south are reminded to have US funds available for admission.

Following a successful spring camp, the Hyacks will begin their summer training program on Thursday, June 25th after the completion of exams. Training sessions will be held on Monday, Wednesday & Thursdays until Aug 13th. All players are expected to attend all sessions when they are in town. Congratulations to tight end Dylan Musgrove, linebacker Hakan Williams, who will become the next Hyacks to play college football at the CIS level. Both players have committed to the University of Windsor, and will become the 29th and 30th NWSS graduates in the past 12 years to play college football. They will also join fellow Hyack alum, QB Tommy Robertson, on the Windsor roster.

In addition, a trio of other Hyacks have been accepted into some elite programs at other prestigious institutions: Marc Massicotte (U of McGill, Biochemistry), Jonathan Tomalty (UBC, Sauder School of Business), Mackenzie Ratcliffe (UBC, Faculty of Science). Congrats to all of our graduates headed to university.

Matt and Harper Matt and Harper

Harper Sherman and Matt Seymour signed their letters of intent on Feb 4th at a press conference at the BC Sports Hall of Fame, accepting full scholarships from NCAA Div 1 universities. These are the only 2 players from all of BC to receive Div 1 scholarships and NWSS is the only high school in Canada to have two players receive Div 1 scholarships. Sherman is the #2 ranked player in Canada while Seymour is ranked 15th. For more details watch the signing ceremony and press conference here.

The JVs played one final tune up prior to the playoffs last Thursday at Mercer Stadium, defeating Notre Dame 26-24. Josh Olango scored twice and Trew Dancey and Lucas Sabau each scored once, to put the Hyacks up 26-6 at halftime. New West is the 3rd seed, among the 12-teams in the provincial playoffs, after finishing the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record against BC teams. They will play their quarter-final playoff game on Thurs, Nov 20th at Mercer Stadium at 5:30 pm.

Matt Seymour’s 2 TDs led the Hyacks to a 24-6 win over Belmont. Tyrone Morgan rushed for 112 yards, including a 60 yard TD on the game’s first offensive play. Defensively Jeff Lutu racked up 12 tackles, an interception and a sack, while Jorge Yarwood added 10 tackles and 2 sacks. The Hyacks improve to 6-2 on the season (4-2 in conference play) and will travel to South Delta on Saturday for a game that could decide 2nd place in the AAA Western Conference.

The Hyacks returned to their winning ways with a 42-14 decision over Handsworth. The Hyacks rushed for 423 yards, led by 132 from Julian Ramirez. Jamie Shiho scored a pair of TDs, while Adrian and Brian Cagampan, Tyrone Morgan and Jordan Guzman also scored for New West. This Friday the Hyacks will honor 20 graduating players on Seniors Night, in the final home game of the regular season.

The Varsity Hyacks used a 20-point explosion in the 2nd quarter to knock off Notre Dame 27-7 at Burnaby Lake. Jamie Shiho, Matt Seymour, David Penalver and Dylan Musgrove each scored TDs. Mackenzie Ratcliffe passed for a pair of majors, while Jeff Lugtu (11 tackles) and Tyrone Morgan (7 tackles, 2 sacks) stood out defensively.

New Westminster was out in full force for the tenth annual Homecoming game presented by Key West Ford. Close to 2000 fans were on hand, to watch the Hyacks defeat West Vancouver 54-8.

The festivities included the Alumni Touch Football Game, Hyack Hoedown pre-game party, followed by the Alumni Reception. As per tradition, the game ball was parachuted onto the field by the BC Sky Diving Team, there was a half-time concert and a post-game fireworks show.

The tenth annual Homecoming game presented by Key West Ford, takes place this Friday night at Mercer Stadium with the Hyacks taking on West Vancouver. Be sure to check out the Homecoming Facebook page.

The festivities get under way at 4:30 p.m. with the ever-popular Alumni Touch Football Game, Hyack Hoedown family activities 5-7 p.m. followed by the Alumni Reception. The knocked off 5th ranked WJ Mouat on Friday, 30-14. Matt Seymour stole the show with a pair of TD receptions, including a spectacular 60 yarder late in the first half. He also added a pair of interceptions and was named the Prime Time Sports Player of the Game. Julian Ramirez and Ardian Cagampan also added rushing TDs. Harper Sherman was named the Dairy Queen Lineman of the Game.

The Hyacks picked up their first win of the season with a hard-fought 11-6 win decision over Centennial at Percy Perry Stadium. Following a safety, Wayne Palmer gave the Hyacks a 5-0 lead with his 3rd field goal of the season. In the 3rd quarter Ebraheim Farroghi blocked a punt deep in Centaurs territory, setting up Jordan Guzman's first varsity TD, and giving New West the win. Julian Ramirez led all Hyack rushers with 74 yards on 11 carries, while Matt Seymour caught three passes for 72 yards.

It was 8 months in the planning, but worth every minute. Seventy members of the Hyack Football program made their way to Texas last week for 7 days of fun, football and memories. The trip included: watching the Florida State vs Oklahoma State college football game at AT&T Stadium, visiting Beaumont Ranch, the Fort Torth Stock Yards, the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza and Six Flags. And of course there were a pair of football games to play! The players were very well-behaved and represented our community well.

The honors continue to come in for Harper Sherman and Matt Seymour who were ranked among the top 100 players in Canada for the class of 2015, by Canada Football Chat. Harper recently picked up his 8th full scholarship offer from an NCAA Div 1 school. He is the #1 ranked offensive lineman in Canada and the top ranked player in BC. Matt is 35th ranked player overall in Canada, the 4th ranked defensive back, and 4th ranked player in BC.

Casey Chin

Congratulations to Hyack Football alum Casey Chin, who was selected by the BC Lions in the 3rd round of the 2014 Draft. Chin, a linebacker and long snapper, becomes the fourth Hyack to be selected in the CFL draft, and the first ever by the Lions. Chin is the Hyacks all-time leading tackler and recently wrapped up his career at SFU by leading the GNAC in tackles for the 3rd straight season, earning 1st team All-Conference honors.

Chin is not the only Hyack to be wearing the Orange and Black of the Lions, as Cody Husband has just signed with the team. Husband has spent the past 3 seasons as an offensive lineman with the Hamilton Tiger Cats.

Tommy Robertson and Bogdan Pavel will be the next Hyacks to play college football at the CIS level. Robertson, a quarterback, has committed to the University of Windsor, while Pavel, a linebacker/defensive end, will play at the University of British Columbia. In 2014 we are planning to take both the varsity and JVs to Texas for the trip of a lifetime. The tentative dates are Aug 24 to 31, with both teams taking on Grandview HS, near Fort Worth. The trip will also include plenty of activities, sightseeing, a Texas Stadium tour and taking in the Florida State vs Oklahoma St college football game.

Gr 11 offensive lineman, Harper Sherman was named to the 2013 AAA Provincial All-star team. He becomes the 6th Hyack offensive linemen to be recognized provincially. Sherman, Billy Collins (DL) and Tristan Sands (WR) were named to the AAA Western Conference all-star team. For Sands, it is the 2nd straight year he earned all-conference honors.

The Varsity Hyacks improved to 6-2 on the season with a 19-14 win over Notre Dame. Both QB Mackenzie Ratcliffe and FB Tyrone Morgan performed well in their first varsity starts. Ratcliffe scored on a 20 yard run. Angelo Tanjuaquio and Kale Brock also scored, while Prabh Bal stood out on defense with 10 tackles.

New West scored 4 times in the first half en route to a 27-6 win over West Van on Friday afternoon at Mercer Stadium. Angelo Tanjuaquio opened the scoring on the Hyacks first possession. Tommy Robertson then scored back to back TDs, and also completed his first 5 passes. Julian Ramirez rounded out the scoring for the Hyacks, Tanjuaquio, turned in an outstanding all-around performance, with 85 rushing yards, 7 tackles and 2 interceptions. The win improves the Hyacks record to 5-1 overall (2-1 in conference play).

Tommy Robertson tied a school record by tossing 3 TD passes in one game, leading the Hyacks to a 35-13 win over Belmont on Friday at Mercer Stadium. In what was the most successful homecoming game ever, the Hyacks defeated Centennial 44-22 in front of over 2300 fans at Mercer Stadium. Matt Seymour opened the scoring on a punt return while Julian Ramirez scored and was named Prime Time Player of the Game. Angelo Tanjuaquio and Terel Bellanger each scored twice, as the Hyacks improved to 3-0 on the season. As a result, Mayor Wayne Wright won his bet with Coquitlam mayor Richard Stewart. The Hyacks win was part of an amazing night which began with a new pre-game party and ended with a fireworks display. The event could not have happened without our team of volunteers and sponsors. Casey Chin

Congratulations to Hyack Football alum Casey Chin, who was named to the CFL’s Top Fifteen Prospects List for the 2014 Draft. Chin, a senior linebacker and captain at SFU, was ranked #12, as released by the CFL’s Scouting Bureau. This past weekend Casey recorded 10 tackles and a pair of 4th quarter interceptions, in SFU’s huge 41-27 upset win over top ranked Humboldt St. For his outstanding effort, Casey was named the GNAC Player of the Week. Quarterback Tommy Robertson’s 3 rushing TDs led the way for the Hyacks in a thrilling 20-14 win over South Delta… The Hyacks trailed in this game 14-7 in the 3rd quarter, before coming back to win. Matt Seymour made 4 tackles, broke up a pair of passes and added a 25 yard reception for New West, who now holds a 4-1 lead in the all-time series. From July 4-8 the Hyacks will be back on the Oregon coast for Team Camp. The camp takes place at Camp Rilea Army Reserve Base in Warrenton, OR. Fifty-two players (Varsity and JV) will take part in practices and scrimmages against American schools. Everyone selected should have received an emailed registration form and checklist of what to bring. Departure time is 9:30 am on Thursday, July 4th from Mercer Stadium. Players should arrive by 9 am.

Sonu Kainth and Jordan Chin are the latest Hyack Football grads who will be playing college football next fall. Sonu has committed to the University of Manitoba. Jordan meanwhile will be attending Concordia University in Montreal to play both football and wrestling. Both players were named to the AAA Western Conference All-star team, and were major award winners for NWSS this past seasons. In the past 10 years, 24 Hyack Football grads have now gone on to play college football.

He is a full-time IB student with a 95% avg and volenteers extensively in our community. Four members of the Hyacks were selected as AAA Western Conference All-Stars. Linebacker Jordan Chin; Defensive lineman Sonu Kainth; Receiver Tristan Sands; and defensive back Eric Teng. Congratulations to all of them for their outstanding seasons.

The Varsity team won its 3rd straight game with a 36-33 win over Mt Boucherie in Kelowna. Aldrin Asuncion scored 3 TDs and rushed for 169 yards on 18 carries. Tommy Robertson rushed for a TD and threw for another to Stewart Sommerfeld. Robertson finished 10 of 15 for 105 yards. Defensively, Sonu Kainth and Jonathan He dominated this game, each recording 5 tackles and 2 sacks.

The JVs remained unbeaten (4-0), posting a 23-0 victory over Kelowna. Kale Brock opened the scoring with a 26 yd TD run. He would later add an 80 yard run. Mackenzie Ratcliffe found Daniel Steeves for a 9 yd TD pass. Adrian Cagampan rounded out the scoring in the 3rd quarter on a 5 yard run. Jonathan Tomalty got his first varsity action, and more than held his own.

Close to 2000 people packed into Mercer Stadium to celebrate 10 years of Hyacks Football. The night began with 50 Hyack Football alumni taking part in the first annual alumni touch football tournament. Torsten Jaccard led the 03/09 team to a perfect 3-0 record! From there the reception was standing room only. Then all-decade team was introduced pre-game, and made the run through the tunnel to the field for one last time. Following the game, fans were able to enjoy a 20 minute fireworks show.

The Hyacks defeated Carson Graham 26-16. Tristan Sands opened the scoring with a TD reception from Tommy Robertson. Julian Ramirez and Aldrin Asuncion each rushed for over 100 yards and scored a TD. James Nicolas scored the final Hyacks major and also had an outstanding game on defense with 6 tackles (2 for loss) and a fumble recovery. Jordan Chin led all tacklers with 10. Asuncion was named the Prime Time Player of the Game, while Tiger Xu was the Burger Haven Lineman of the game. Thanks to Deb Wardle and a host of volunteers or making the entire 10-year celebration a truly memorable one.

The Hyacks gave the Mercer stadium fans a very good performance in a 40-0 win over Abbotsford. Aldrin Asuncion rushed for the first 2 Hyack TDs and 128 yards. Julian Ramirez added 108 all-purpose yards and a TD. Eric Teng scored on an interception return and was named the Prime Time Sports Player of the Game. Jordan Chin was named the Burger Haven lineman of the week. Next up will be the Homecoming game this Friday night at Mercer Stadium against Carson Graham.

Cody Husband

It was a proud moment for the Hyack Football family, as Cody Husband became the first new-era Hyack to play in the CFL. On Friday against the BC Lions, Cody played most of the game at guard for the Ticats, and had an outstanding 2nd half. He got tickets for our linemen to attend the game.

The Hyacks wrapped up a busy week of football. Fifty-five players took part in the Central Washington University camp in Ellensburg, the largest number of Hyacks ever to attend a team camp, and they improved steadily throughout the week. That was followed by the innaugural MVP Hyacks Football team camp at Mercer, which was well received by all those in attendance and promises to be a fixture on the high school football scene for years to come.

Both the Sr and JV Hyack teams showed plenty of promise this spring. The varsity wrapped up with a 21-21 tie with Blaine HS. Angelo Tanjuaquio rushed for over 100 yards and scored a pair of TDs. Jordan Chin and Kaeden Hnatow stood out on defense with 5 tackles apiece. The JVs preformed well in their jamboree, with Jamie Shiho, Jeff Lugtu and Mark Massicotte standing out. Regan Eberding becomes the latest Hyack Football player to earn a football scholarship. The graduating senior DB/QB just committed to the UBC Thunderbirds. Eberding missed most of his senior season due to a shoulder injury, but still managed to impress college recruiters based on the athleticism he showed during his grade 11 season and the handful of games he played in grade 12. Eberding was also the 2011 winner of the Sidoo Family Scholarship based on his academic and athletic achievement, leadership and perseverance. He becomes the 22nd NWSS grad in the past 9 years to play college football.

Congratulations to Hyack Football Alumni Casey Chin, who is currently in Austin, TX where he will play for the IFAF World Team in the International Bowl taking place on Feb 1st. After earlier being named to the 2011 GNAC All-Conference team, while playing for SFU, Casey is one of only 3 players from BC who has been selected to the World Team. They will play the USA Under-19 All-star team, and the game will be televised on live on CBS Sports Network at 3 pm PT.

In one of the most thrilling games in the history of the program, the Varsity Hyacks came through with a 21-14 win over West Van on Friday night, to advance to the AAA provincial playoffs. Jonathan Lopez, Makoto Brennan and Jeremy Wilson combined for the game (and season) saving tackle in the final minute. Kevin Sabau, Tommy Robertson and Jeremy Wilson scored for the Hyacks. Jonathan Lopez was named to the AAA Western Conference all-star team. Lopez returned to the Hyacks lineup 4 games ago, playing with a cast on his hand. He still managed to finish 2nd on the team in tackles, including a game-high 11 in Friday's big win over West Van. Jeremy Wilson and Makoto Brennen were honorable mentions. Brennen was the team's leading tackler this season while Wilson was the team leader in receptions and sacks.

Aldrin Asuncion became the 6th Hyack ever to break the 200 yard mark (221) as he led New West to a 33-26 win over Carson Graham in the league opener for both teams. Gr 10 QB Tommy Robertson scored 3 rushing TDs and added an interception for the Hyacks who are now 1-0 in league play (3-2 overall). Defensively Jordan Chin (10 tackles), Jonathan He (6 tackles, 1 sack) and Jeremy Wilson (6 tackles) also stood out.

The Hyacks improved to 2-1 against BC teams with a 27-9 win over Mt Boucherie in the Homecoming game on Friday night. Aldrin Asuncion rushed for 137 yards and 2 TDs. Prime Time Sports Player of the Game, Tommy Robertson, rushed for 1 TD and passed to Kevin Sabau for another. Jordan Chin led the defense with 9 tackles and 2 sacks, as New West is now 6-1 all-time on Homecoming. There was another big crowd on hand and plenty of alumni support. Thanks to Jayne Adetola for all her efforts in organizing the alumni function.

The 6th annual Homecoming game will take place this Friday, Sept 23rd at Mercer Stadium against Mt. Boucherie. Another crowd of 1500+ is expected to be on hand including plenty of Hyack grads from all eras. New West has recorded a 5-1 record in homecoming games. Touchdowns by Regan Eberding and Jonathan Lopez helped propel the Hyacks to 16-13 win on Friday against South Delta in the Kushnir Boot game. Lopez also added an interception and earned the Prime Time Sports Player of the Game. Jonathan He was named the Burger Haven Lineman of the Game. Aldrin Asuncion eclipsed the 100 yard mark for the first time as a Hyack. New West improves to 1-1 and plays at Terry Fox next Friday night.

A group of close to 80 Hyacks players, coaches and managers are on their way to California. The team will have a weeks worth of fun at Disneyland, Six Flags, a USC game, and of course practices all week and games against Citrus Valley High School on Friday, Sept 2nd. The NWSS football program is pleased to announce that five more Hyack grads have accepted scholarships to play football at CIS schools across Canada. Jamie Wandell and James Belgrave will be moving from one coast to the other to attend St Mary's University in Halifax. Nick Adomat will be attending McGill, Ian Henderson will play locally at UBC and Milthon Nevy will attend University of Toronto. With the additions of these players, the total number of Hyacks to play college football reaches 21, in just eight seasons. More

Cody Husband

Cody Husband will be the first new era Hyack to play in the CFL, as he has made the roster of the Hamilton Ti-Cats. Cody was a three-year member of the Hyacks, earning provincial all-star honors in 2005, before spending the past five years at UBC.

Congratulations to Jamie Wandell who was just selected to play in the upcoming IFAF World vs USA Under-19 game on Feb 2nd in Austin, TX. He is the only BC high school football player to be invited and one of only 5 high school players from anywhere to be selected. In December, Jamie performed well in the NUC All-American game which was seen line on Fox College Sports (game available in video section). Good luck in Texas! More

Congratulations to Jamie Wandell, who was recently selected to play in the inaugural NUC All-World Gridiron Classic, Dec 31st at The Citadel in Charleston , South Carolina . The game will showcase 114 elite high school seniors from all across the globe and can be seen live on Fox College Sports. Jamie is one of 4 players in Canada to be invited, and the 4th Hyack in the past 2 years to participate in an All-American game. For more information click here.

Congratulations to Nick Adomat, Jamie Wandell and Ian Henderson who were recently honored for their outstanding accomplishments on the football field. Adomat was one of 9 graduating seniors in BC to earn a $1000 scholarship for his outstanding academic acheivement, community service and football ability. Wandell was named to the Provincial all-star team and was recognised as the top lineman in the AAA western conference. Henderson led the province in tackling (99) and was named to the all conference team.

Fifteen Hyacks played their final game ever at Mercer Stadium on Friday and they did so with a 35-16 victory over Earl Marriott. Five different players scored for the home team. James Belgrave (83 yards) and Manraj Bains (70 yards) each scored on long runs. David Ramirez and Robert Arciaga scored their first TDs, while Serafino Gentile threw his first touchdown pass, to Jeremy Wilson. Jonathan Lopez also had a pair of interceptions. The Hyacks finish the season with a 3-3 conference record. Thanks to all of the parents who were on hand for the Seniors Night festivities and for their support of the football program.

The Hyacks will take on Earl Marriott this Friday night in the final home game of the season at Mercer. A win would improve the Hyacks record to 3-3 for the season and virtually clinch a playoff spot. For 15 graduating seniors, this will be their final home game in a New West uniform. This includes names like Nick Adomat, Clay Alexson, Brandon Braich and Jamie Wandell who have been in the Hyacks program since Jr Bantam, along with Regan Eberding, Ian Henderson and Manraj Bains, who joined the family in JV.
All 15 seniors and their parents will be recognized in what has become a special night on the football calendar. Game time is 7:30 pm.

James Belgrave

The Hyacks played a complete game on Friday and it led to their first win of the season, 35-24 over Mt Douglas. James Belgrave scored his first of two TDs on the first play of the game, and became the 5th Hyack ever to rush for over 200 yards. Jeremy Wilson caught two TD passes from Regan Eberding, while the offensive line consisting of Nick Adomat, Makoto Brennan, Jordan Chin, Jonathan He, Derek Stagner and Jamie Wandell had its best game of the season, leading the Hyacks to over 450 yards of offense.Nick Adomat was the Burger Haven Lineman of the game, with consistent play on offense, 3 tackles on defense, and 1 sack.

With 5 league games still to come, the Hyacks offense looks like its returning to form. The team rushed for 331 yards and finished with 416 total yards in a 49-28 loss against Kelowna, the 4th ranked team in BC. Regan Eberding rushed for 122 yards, threw for another 85 yards and a TD and registered 7 tackles on defense. Ian Henderson caught a TD pass, he also added 113 rushing yards and another TD, along with 4 tackles on defense. Makoto Brennan was the Burger Haven Lineman of the game, with 3 tackles and a safety on defense along with making his first start at guard.

The Hyacks 3-game home stand wraps up this Friday night with 3rd ranked Vancouver College coming to Mercer. CTV will again be live on location for their weekly High School Heroes segment with promotions throughout the week. The Irish are the only team to win a league game at Mercer in the past 3 years.

With 2 minutes remaining the underdog Hyacks were right there with a chance to win. But in the end, BC's top ranked team, WJ Mouat came away with a 40-20 win. The Hyacks managed 320 rushing yards, most of which came in the 2nd half when offense came alive for the first time this season. James Belgrave led the attack with 126 yards and a TD. Prime Time Player of the Game, Ian Henderson had 100 yards and 8 tackles, while Regan Eberding scored 2 TDs and added 6 tackles. Makoto Brennen was the Burger Haven Lineman of the game with 5 tackles.

The number one ranked team in BC, WJ Mouat, provides the opposition this Friday as the Hyacks play their first game of the season at Mercer Stadium at 7pm. This past Friday the Hyacks fell 40-0 to Kennedy HS, ranked #3 in Oregon 3A. Ian Henderson and David Ramirez were the best of New West, with 8 and 7 tackles respectively and combining for 120 yards. The Hyacks then spent Saturday taking in the U of Oregon game vs New Mexico.

James Belgrave

Seventy-five players opened fall camp last Monday and so far the early results have been encouraging for the Hyacks. The first week of camp wrapped up with the annual Orange-White scrimmage last Friday with the Orange squad coming back for an 18-12 win. Backup RBs John Santos and Robert Arciaga turned in some nice runs. Ian Henderson, James Belgrave and Jamie Wandell also made a big impact for the Orange squad in the victory. Kennedy HS of Mt Angel, Oregon will provide the opposition as the Hyacks season opens this Friday. Following the game the Hyacks will spend the night in Oregon before taking in the U of Oregon vs New Mexico game at Autzen Stadium.

TSN Kraft Celebration Tour - a hit in New Westminster

Over 1000 people were on hand at Tipperary Park for the final stop of TSN’s cross-Canada Kraft Celebration Tour. The day included a live broadcast of Sportscentre featuring Jay Onrait and Dan O’Toole. The day before the big show, Jay and Dan spent some time practicing with the Hyacks, with the hilights of the practice were shown on Sportscentre.

New Westminster wins $25,000 and TSN visit

The votes are in and New Westminster defeated Nelson in the Kraft Celebration Tour online vote on July 23rd. As a result the Royal City will be awarded $25,000 towards the new Youth Center at Moody Park. Field renamed in honor of Coach Chin

Mackin Park's south field in Coquitlam will be renamed Kevin Chin Field to honour the longtime football coach and teacher, who passed away in September 2007 at age 51. Chin coached 28 years at various levels throughout BC, the last 2 at NWSS, where his sons Casey and Jordan are players. "He was a great man and football was his passion," said Coach Chin's wife, Sylvie. "Basically, he had three passions -- one was his work, one was his family and the other was football."

Nasser Jamal drafted by Argos

Congratulations to Nasser Jamal who became the first NWSS Grad drafted into the CFL since the football program was resurrected in 2003. Jamal, a 6'6", 290 pound offensive lineman, was selected by the Toronto Argos in the 6th round (40th overall). Jamal is currently playing at University of Louisiana at Lafayette (NCAA Div 1) where he will return for his senior season this fall. Cody Husband (6'7", 290 lbs, O-line, UBC) is also expected to sign a contract with the Hamilton Tiger Cats. Both Nasser and Cody were provincial all-stars with the Hyacks in 2005.

The Hyacks football program is pleased to announce that three more NWSS grads have signed letters of intent to attend and play football at Simon Fraser University in 2010. Linebackers Vivie Bojilov and Casey Chin have accepted scholarships to play for the Clan and they will be joined by defensive back Warren Reece. The total of NWSS grads to play college football is now 16 in the past 7 years.

Daniel English

After setting numerous NWSS receiving records over the past 3 seasons, Daniel English has signed a letter of intent to attend university and play football for New Mexico State University. English (6’3”, 200 lbs) is a 5-year member of the Hyacks Football program and a three-year varsity starter. English becomes the 3rd NWSS grad in the past five years to earn an NCAA Div 1 scholarship.
